Hi there, it’s Alex Goad, bestselling author, coach, small business specialist, and today with a 10 x your life lightening quick capsule, I want to talk to you about a subject that I see a ton of people falling victim to. And here’s what it is. It’s the seemingly, or I should say the extraordinarily high price of what seems to be small time innocuous addictions. So I’m talking here largely NOT about hard drugs or alcohol, I’m talking about small time stuff, right? Like social media, technology and food. All of the above have been engineered specifically by scientists in order to be extraordinarily attractive to the human brain because it provides a very high level of stimulation very easily. And there’s a very big danger in overdoing these things. And it’s not just that you become fat that should become unhealthy and that you spend so much time sitting down and doing something that’s really not that constructive and doesn’t bring you much.

The real problem is that it rewires the brain to make it more attractive to do that and to make it less attractive to do everything else. So if you think about this for a second, if you’re really serious about getting big things done with your life, if you’re not going to be contented with the bare minimum, if whatever you’ve got right now is just a stepping stone for what you want to have later, well you need your brain to be your best ally. You need your brain to be cooperative. You need to be able to give orders and goals to your brain and for your brain to go like “Yes, I’ll do that for you, my friend right away, sir.” The problem, again, with these seemingly innocuous addictions, this, here’s what they do. There’s a reward structure in the brain that’s basically the dopamine pathway.

So we’ve got these structures and when scientists bring up the brain scans of addicts, and this can be a cocaine addict, it can be a meth addict, it can be a social media addict, it can be a food addict. It looks exactly the same on the brain scan. And what they find is that that structure in the brain is atrophied in addicts. And so what happens is that that structure becomes deficient and it starts working so poorly that normal stimulation and the stuff that would normally cause you to feel happy, excited, fulfilled, or even pleasure. We’ll all of those things. It’s like you turn the volume down to the point where you can barely hear it. So it becomes very unattractive to strive for longterm targets to delay gratification. And what it does pretty much is it makes us into squirrel minded individuals that can’t concentrate on anything for more than a couple of seconds at a time.

Science literally showed that the attention span of the average tech addicted human being is now lower than the attention span of a fruit fly. If you can imagine that. So here’s why I’m telling you this is because if you want a giant psychological upgrade, and in fact, here’s what everyone wants in life, right? An edge over our peers and over other people in the environment that are looking to get the same thing, like we all want to have a kind of unfair advantage, don’t we? Well, the biggest unfair advantage that you can give yourself today is to give yourself a well functioning brain that is willing and able to focus properly for long periods of time on creating the outcomes that you really want, rather than just pressing the button, pressing the button either by scrolling social media, by putting foods in our mouth that are exceptionally attractive when you stop doing these things.

And this is also a science shows, is that within days the reward pathway starts to regenerate within weeks. Your ability to concentrate, to go deep into things that are significant increases and within three to six months, in most cases, the structures of the brain are entirely regenerated to the point where you become quote unquote normal again. Well, being a normal human being means that you want to invest yourself in things that are significant in life, in high quality relationships, friendships in bettering yourself and taking care of your health in dreaming up a future that’s attractive to you and in taking concrete steps on a daily basis to reach those things. And all of that goes out the window when you have an easy and predictable way to just push buttons and create that dopamine – release, dopamine – release, dopamine – release. So again, you want a giant psychological upgrade, figure out how to do less of those things.

It doesn’t mean you can’t do it at all, but it means that you have to get it under the threshold of addiction. And I can’t tell you how to do that in just the short video because it’s more complicated than you know, 32nd bribed that I could tell you. But here’s just one thing that I recommend that you try. If you get up in the morning every morning and the first thing that you do is you check your phone and you see, did you get any text messages overnight? Did you get any likes on your pictures of your comments? Whatever it is that you do, you check your email to see maybe if sales have come in, if an opportunities of shaping up, whatever it is. If the first thing that you do in the morning as you check your phone, do something else. Instead, do a morning ritual, meditate, go do some sports.

Read a book, even if it’s just for five or 10 minutes. But here’s what I’m saying is instead of having something random dumped into your mind first thing in the morning, take a couple of minutes for yourself and decide what you’re going to put in there. Decide what significant to you and just doing that small building blocks and eventually you reclaim the territory, you reclaim your full mental capacities and then you’re the one who’s awake among a sea of addicted zombies. So give it a try. I think you’ll be really surprised by the results. And here’s how you know if you’re really having trouble is try picking up a book and seeing can you actually read several pages. If you can read several pages, maybe you’re okay, but if your mind starts drifting off immediately, that’s a sign that you probably don’t have access to anywhere near your actual full powers of concentration. And can you really afford not to have that if you’re serious about making an impact in this world? I think not. So listen, I’m Alex Goad. Thank you for watching this short capsule. I’m going to remind you that today matters, so make it count. Thanks for watching. I’ll see you next time.
